Congratulations UNESCO World Heritage Site 10th Anniversary George Town and Melaka!
It's been 10 years since George Town's inscription as UNESCO World Heritage Site together with Malacca.
George Town also known as "Tanjung" for local people has been a great capital for Penang. There is a wealth of creativity, plus a dedication to preserving this island state’s colonial heritage and evidence of this can be found in everywhere. Melaka and George Town, Cities of the Straits of Malacca was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 7 July 2008. This heritage site is the oldest British colonial town in South East Asia which represents an early development from British period at the end of 18th century. The heritage site is enclosed by Light Street, Beach Street, Chulia Street and Kapitan Keling Street.
Heritage sites in George Town
George Town and Melaka has been qualified for an Outstanding Understanding Value (OUV) for heritage site in 2008 as following criteria:
1) A historic multi-cultural trading. George Town and Melaka represent exceptional examples of multi-cultural trading towns in East and Southeast Asia. They were established and well-known by trading activities that result in the blending of Malay, Chinese and Indian cultures with successive European colonial powers over a period of 500 years.
2) A testimony of multi-cultural living heritage. George Town and Melaka are a living testimony to the multi-cultural heritage and tradition of Asia. The tangible and intangible heritage of the two cities are expressed in its religious buildings of different faiths, ethnic enclaves, spoken dialects, foods, culture, festivities, dances, attire, and lifestyle.
3) A unique townscape with multi-cultural architecture. George Town and Melaka reflect the blend of influences that result in a unique form of architecture, culture and townscape incomparable elsewhere in East and South Asia. This can been seen in difference type of shop houses and townhouses with variety of architecture styles.
Heritage sites in George Town has been divided into CORE ZONE (109.38 hectares) and BUFFER ZONE (150.04 hectares). The picture below shows the areas of George Town World Heritage Site.
Therefore, it is a pleasure to visit George Town once in a life to know the beautiful and interesting architecture to be explored in the heritage sites.
